Visualising GDI data with Google Earth

On this page you'll find information about a test done to see how to best visualise large-volume distributed data (as found typically in a GeoData Infrastructure) using the Google Earth virtual globe software. We tested this with the Open Street Map data set for the Netherlands, a dataset containing road data for navigational purposes as well additional topographic data. Here you can find information about the technical background and the broader project:

  • a paper about the project (presented at the AGILE 2009 conference (PDF file)
  • the technical report by Marc Graham, the GFM3 student who actually designed and implemented it (PDF file)

And of course you can try it out by loading one of these KML files in your Google Earth application:

*** ...SORRY, THIS SERVICE HAS BEEN STOPPED FOR THE MOMENT... ***

You can also find some limited metadata information about the datalayers in this data set.
